Carmagazine.comToyota Motor Corp. will resume production at six North American assembly plants today after a one-week shutdown, the company said Sunday.
Toyota spokesman Mike Michels said the company has enough replacement pedals to begin turning out vehicles again.
"There are sufficient repair parts for customer cars as well as areserve of pedals from last week's stoppage, that we can begin production," Michels said Sunday.
The company stopped production at plants Canada, Indiana, Kentucky and Texas.
After Toyota recalled 2.3 million vehicles on Jan. 21, it was forced to stop selling eight models accounting for nearly 60 percent of their sales volume on Jan. 26. The company's dealers have begun selling models in the showroom on a "vehicle by vehicle" basis as they make a repair to the pedal assembly.
Last week, the company's dealers began fixing thousands of the recalled vehicles, with some staying open around the clock to accommodate customers.
Toyota wouldn't comment on a new round of reports out of Japan that the company was preparing to recall 270,000 third-generation Prius vehicles assembled since May over braking issues. The company made a change to the software of the braking system last month to resolve the issue, but hasn't said how it will address current vehicles.
Toyota did tell its U.S. dealers on Friday that it was quickly moving toward finding "a solution for existing customers" -- but didn't say if it would be a recall, service bulletin or service campaign.
